Fire on May 17 Caused by Batteries in Residual Waste

On May 17, the fire department had to respond to a fire at our facility in Grimstad, caused by batteries that had been thrown into the residual waste.

Fires caused by batteries lead to unnecessary use of resources — both for us and for the fire department.

Saturday’s incident is yet another reminder of how important it is not to throw batteries in the waste bin, but instead place them in a separate bag and hang it on the hook for hazardous waste, so they can be handled safely.

For those using underground or bottom-emptied containers — and who therefore don’t have individual bins with a hazardous waste hook — batteries can also be returned to grocery stores and other retailers that sell batteries.

Please remember this the next time you need to dispose of batteries.
